Great Theatre with Lots of Garlic

Great Small Works has moved their monthly Spaghetti Dinner to a new location.  While P.S. 122 has shown them the door, the 14th Street Y has invited them up on the roof.  This Sunday, June 24th, at 7 pm, GSW will pay tribute to LGBTQ history.  "For us, every month is Queer Month," said Jenny Romaine, Artistic Director. "But this is a special shout out."  While she would not divulge details of the top secret performances, she did indicate that it will be very educational. There will be an homage to Stonewall, a reenactment of erotic love letters between Jesus and Judas recently found in the Vatican and lots of mimes in high heels.

Wobblies will rescue and organize the exploited Mermaid baristas at Starbucks.  Romaine wouldn't say if the audience will get wet or not, but confirmed that the mermaids are very sexy and glamorous.

On hand will be Sarah Wilson's Trapeze Project, and Kate Rigg, lead singer of Slanty Eyed Mama.  There will also be performances by Richard Chang (GOY VEY! Adventures of a Dim Sun in Search of his Wanton Father) and a silent opera by poet Joe Dobkin.  There might also be special surprise appearances by other artists.

If all of this isn't enough to entice you, there will be a cheap cash bar for beer and wine, great bread from The Sullivan Street Bakery and vegetarian spaghetti "with mad amounts of garlic."   When artists from The Vermont Bread and Puppet Theatre and the East Ninth Street Theatre got together and started their Spaghetti Dinners back in 1978, the garlic aroma was their version of free advertising--it literally pulled people in from the street.

Romain said that while the Spaghetti Dinners are to showcase new talent, the designs are artistically top notch.  The shows are serious but also funny.  "This is a visual art, so a lot of information comes from the design.  Our goal is renewing and reviving the spirits of the audience--to keep them uplifted and entertained. It's a party--with food."  - Sherry Mazzocchi
