Potluck conjures up the image of weird recipes like lentils with nutmeg or noodles drenched in canned soup served up in a covered dish. So why is it the name of this beautiful new Asian restaurant on the corner of 26th Street and 8th Avenue? "It's a kind of Japanese pot," was all the waiter would tell us. There is probably an interesting story there, somewhere, but further visits are required to pry it out.
The good news is you won't mind going back. The restaurant, which just opened last week, is easy on they eye and the wallet. They offer sushi, sashimi, bento boxes and even Thai dishes for very reasonable prices. The first floor has a full sushi bar with plenty of seating. A circular staircase leads up to a cozy second floor.
Pictured above is the Sashimi Love--15 pieces of chef selected sashimi. The Thai Tom Yum soup is an unusual blend of tomatoes, pineapple, mushrooms and seafood in a tomato-based broth. They warned it would be spicy and they were blissfully correct.
The Crispy Banana Shrimp roll was fun--the texture of hot banana was a good combination with the shrimp--but the toasted coconut made the dish a little dryer than it should have been. The Thai Red Shrimp Curry was excellent and did not disappoint. The creamy red sauce had a nice coconut lilt. The dish featured the additional surprise of eggplant and asparagus, which worked because they were perfectly cooked. Definitely worth going back.
