New Piece of Crap to be Thrown Up at Perry and Washington Streets
Born and Drukier are really running roughshod over New York. Now they are proposing a massive 9 story glass hotel for
the corner of Washington and Perry. They already have two of their ghastly towers, the Meiers buildings, nearby at 173/176 Perry Street. Additionally, they are responsible for the glass tower at 166 Perry Street. Why has it suddenly become open season along the entire west side of lower Manhattan? West Chelsea, the Meatpacking District, the West Village, and West SoHo are all starting to look like some crappy suburban office park. (It seems like every single project that developers come up with is designed to be the biggest, gaudiest monstrosity they can possibly get away with. Doesn’t it ever occur to any of them to build a modest, attractive building that a reasonable person would be proud to call home? ) Isn’t there room for human scale development or better yet, leaving well enough alone – anywhere in New York?
This kind of megalomaniacal insensitivity to all concerns of context, community, aesthetics, human sensitivity and decency – though patently typical of some New York developers – should be enough to raise red flags for anyone who lives at the Chelsea Hotel – also controlled by BD Hotels for the time being. We don’t want our building to go the way of the West Side of Manhattan. -- Ed Hamilton (Photo: Gothamist)

Since when is a 9 story building considered "massive"?

Don't forget those monstrous Trump rental buildings marching up the Upper West Side, cutting off light and views from everyone else in the neighborhood.

You'd think we were living a glass house around here. They haven't even turned on the heat yet!

the area is landmarked, they cant build a 9 story building and would landmarks let them build glass?

Yeah, these tasteless boneheads are turning Manhattan into 1970s Dallas -- or a Toledo Industrial Park. And in light of 9/11 isn;t it reckless and irresponsible to be putting up these things?

How would it be reckless to be put up a building of this sort after 9/11 LP? What do you base that on? I'm sure a building like that is just as structurally sound as one of brick. It is amazing to me the tactics of some on this blog. Dont you realize you're just fueling the BD fire with your ignorant statements?

Right. BD people aren't responsible for their behavior. We're responsible for them. We must all say nothing but nice things or BD will send us to the cornfield like that spoiled kid on twilight zone.
An explosion could blow those windows right out, depending where it hits. The WTC was considered structurally sound too, don't forget. Next?

These glass buildings are truly ugly.
