Who Could Hate the Chelsea?

There was a German couple staying next door to us in the transient room.  One afternoon I ran into the man coming out of his room, and I said, “How are you enjoying your stay here at the Chelsea?”

            “Oh, it was great until yesterday, when my wife packed up and went back to Germany without telling me.”

            “Wow! That is a bummer,” I said.  “Did she not like New York?  I know it can be very fast-paced and intimidating.”

            “She liked New York fine.”

            “Then maybe it was the hotel.  You know, there are some people who really hate it.”

            “No, she loved the hotel,” the man said.  “I think it was just me.” -- Ed Hamilton

Recently read the book and am planning brief sojourn at the Chelsea. Want to make the most of my time there. Not much bohemian joy in South Wales , UK. Frequently enjoy the French Pub in Soho , London but need a better fix of craziness to make me feel whole again. Any suggestions people?

Have you seen the comments on the travel websites about the Chelsea??? Obviously there are quite afew people that hate it. I was planning on staying at the Chelsea in January. After reading the reviews on tripadvisor, I'll stay elsewhere.

Ah yes , but this all very much depends on what you are looking for in a place to rest in NYC. As an example , the male toilets in the French Pub leave a lot to be desired and in fact constitute a death trap in accessing them , but the experience of the French , for example being stared at by paint spattered old painetrs whilst you nibble on an olive and enjoy a bottle of champagne cannot be beat. I once stayed in a highly recommended hotel in Calais , France and apart from the cat who lived on the roof I had a ghastly time of it. One must say that I support entirely any campaign to bring back the Bards as I detest corporate greed. Read Ed's book my friend and see what it means to grasp on to the shirt tails of bohemia.
