Nelson Sullivan, famous for documenting 1980s club culture started his career here at the Chelsea according to Dick Richard, "One of Nelson's first videos was of the 75th (?) anniversary celebration at the Chelsea on November 20, 1983 - so I imagine the most famous and favorite person he rode on the elevator with was the actress Sylvia Miles. They were very best friends and attended the event together.
I wasn't able to find the Chelsea video online, but here is a link to another Nelson Sullivan video, Christina at the Chelsea. Christina was an artist/punk/transvestite and a celebrity of sorts in the Downtown NYC scene of the 1980s. She was portrayed by Marilyn Manson in the recent Hollywood film "Party Monster." http://www.gaytona.com/fabulousfriends/christinajaynepreview.mov
Unfortunately, Nelson Sullivan died of a heart attack on July 4th, 1989, only a few weeks after Christina died mysteriously in her room at The Chelsea.
